Sex and Relationship

Sex and Relationship

What is Sex and Relationship Education?

SRE is lifelong learning about physical, moral and emotional development. It is about the understanding of the benefits of stable and loving relationships, respect, love and care and the role marriage can take in this. It is also about the teaching of sex, sexuality and sexual health but not about the promotion of sexual activity/orientation.

It has three main elements

  • Attitudes and values
  • Personal and social skills
  • Knowledge and understanding

These are outlined in more detail in attached appendices.

How and Who is Responsible for Providing SRE?

SRE education is delivered as part of the PSHE/Citizenship and Science curriculum’s and is coordinated by the Teacher in Charge. Because of the flexible rolling nature of the Group provision is made for missed work to be covered and for topics to be revisited as necessary. There are also opportunities for issues to be addressed as and when appropriate outside of the formal curriculum as part of everyday group life.

Confidentiality is a vital part of this work and ground rules re the asking of personal questions and disclosures are reiterated at start of sessions.

The school nurse visits on a regular basis and as with all visitors is not left on own with group.

Resources used are specific age related and are sourced from Health Promotion, Teenage Pregnancy Unit and educational suppliers.

Monitoring and Evaluation of SRE

Monitoring and Evaluation is undertaken formally and informally through staff consultation and pupil feedback and is responsive to pupil, health and community needs.

Role of Parents/Carers

Parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of the sex and relationship education except for those parts included in the statutory National Curriculum for Science.

It is recognised that parents/carers have a key role in teaching their children about sex, relationships and growing up and at times may need support to fulfil this role. Parents/carers will be worked with in partnership and consulted about SRE programme content.

Review of Policy

Policy will be reviewed every two years in line with other policies initially in consultation with the Advisory Headteacher for Learning Support and then policy will be agreed by Management Meeting.
