The Attic

Smoking Policy 2013

The Attic acknowledges that some young people do smoke but will work hard to support them to realise the health implications and support them to reduce or give up.

The Attic will strive towards a zero tolerance of smoking with all young people by working together with young people, staff, parents/cares and outside agencies.

The aim of this policy is to ensure a smoke free building and to support healthy lifestyles.

By this we mean:

  • The Attic will support the legal requirements to maintain a smoke free environment at work.
  • Encourage other young people to respect other young people’s choice not to smoke and support other young people not to smoke.
  • The Attic staff must not smoke in the presence of young people on or off site.
  • All staff, future staff, parents/carers, young people and visitors will be informed of this policy.
  • All The Attic staff and young people will be offered support to stop or reduce their smoking.
  • The Attic will support, as appropriate, wider community anti-smoking initiatives.

  • To include Smoking Policy for prospective employees in the induction pack.
  • Clearly worded signs will be displayed at the The Attic.
  • Information will be included in the The Attic information pack for young people and parents/carers and in the staff Induction Pack.
  • Details on smoking cessation services will be available to all through individual and group sessions, where appropriate.
  • Parents/carers will be advised when there are young people on site and that they must take personal responsibility to smoke out of sight of the young people at all times.
  • Police do visit the local; area and may challenge or confiscate smoking materials.

On induction to The Attic all young people will be asked if they smoke. If they do a programme will be put in place for them. They will be encouraged to attend individual and group support and education sessions. This will be agreed at induction with staff, young people and their parents/cares.

If they do not smoke they will be informed that they may see others smoking but they will not be permitted to start. They will be given support to resist peer pressure.

  • This policy is available to view on request.
  • The responsibility for the implementation of this policy rests with the all staff.
  • The young people, parents and carers and MC will review this policy annually.
  • As part of the The Attic assessment, young peoples health needs (including nicotine addiction) will be identified and appropriate intervention included in their Personal Plan.
  • An active approach will be taken to incorporate smoking cessation and support for young people within the Service.
  • Young people will be involved in making this policy accessible and understandable to young people and on its review.

The Attic needs to prepare young people going into ETE and reflect the boundaries they will meet in the workplace or ongoing educational placement.

The Attic needs to support young people to resist peer pressure to smoke.

To facilitate the training of staff to lead smoking cessation groups or to direct to outside support.
